Conocer la arquitectura alpujarreña es hacer un viaje en el tiempo hasta encontrar sus orígenes en las tribus bereberes que poblaron estas tierras.
Construcciones de similares características se hallan en el Rif y en otros lugares a lo largo del arco mediterráneo.
Su estilo se adapta al entorno montañoso, siguiendo sus accidentes geográficos. Las casas se disponen de forma escalonada, con una orientación sur o a espacios abiertos para aprovechar la bonanza climática. En la actualidad todos los pueblos lucen encalados, pero en otras épocas sus materiales se camuflaban perfectamente con el paisaje, consiguiendo una integración total. Las casas están construidas con piedra, barro, pizarra, launa y madera de castaño. Materiales del entorno que se integran perfectamente con las laderas y con las condiciones climáticas, lo que da lugar a una vivienda absolutamente bioclimática.
Las casas están dispuestas unas sobre otras, de forma escalonada, siguiendo la pendiente de la montaña, dándole a las calles un trazado sinuoso y caótico. Otro rasgo típico de la arquitectura alpujarreña son las chimeneas, rematadas con un sombrero formado por una laja y una piedra castigadera.
Situada entre Sierra Nevada y el mar Mediterráneo, es una comarca casi virgen, ideal para el turismo rural y la práctica de deportes de aventura. El Barranco de Poqueira, con sus pueblos blancos, ha cobrado gran prestigio como destino turístico. Destacan también localidades como Lanjarón, Trevélez, Cádiar, Órgiva y todas las situadas en el verde y fértil Valle de Lecrín.
